Cheap San Diego Fun

Hi everyone!
If you live near San Diego, you're in for a real treat...."Fleet Week"
begins this week with all kinds of cool, patriotic and FREE activities for you and your family. Get details at www.fleetweek-sandiego.org
Another great bargain in San Diego that is coming up is FREE admission to the world famous San Diego zoo! All children 11 years old and younger are admitted FREE during the entire month of October from 9-4:00! Even better, in honor of their "Founder's Day", EVERYONE gets in free on October 3rd!
Next weekend is also the Cabrillo National Monument festival. They say it is the most often visited monument in the US, which I find hard to believe, but hey, it gives them an excuse to throw a FREE festival! Check out www.nps.gov/cabr

Now for some thrifty tips EVERYONE can enjoy....
OneShare coupons allow you to save up to $10 or more on your purchase of one share of stock of your favorite company at www.Oneshare.com. One share of stock will make a perfect birthday or baby-shower gift for anyone, including children. You can teach your children or grandchildren with The My First Stock Program® or you can collect them for yourself.
Our family has pretty much tried every kind of health plan there is out there, trying to save a few bucks. Knowing how to chart those seas can be very difficult because the system is constantly changing. It’s been a frustration for listeners, but now Georgetown University has put together a printable online guide for you to navigate the health insurance industry.
It’s called healthinsuranceinfo.net, and it has a state-by-state guide. The guide answers questions including what your rights are when switching from one company to another, when you start an individual plan and what is covered under you plan. Check it out!
Thankfully, hurricane Rita didn't cause the terrible damage officials were bracing for. That's great news for gas prices. According to experets, we'll still be over $2 but should stay under $3 through to the end of the year.
Have a wonderful day!

Delta Airlines

Hi gang!
I usually send just one e-mail a week, but I wanted to let you know about a couple of things today:
You have probably heard by now that Delta Airlines has filed for Chapter 11 and you're probably wondering what that means to you....Wwhat happens? Well, for now nothing happens. Airlines have had a long history of seeking compensation and protection from bills when they file for bankruptcy. This is just another chapter. If you’re holding flights on Northwest or Delta, your flights are fine. The only caveat is that holiday travel can be severely disrupted when an airline files for bankruptcy. So, Thanksgiving and Christmas this year may be tough. It’s common for airlines to eliminate
15 to 20 percent of their aircraft when it happens. So Clark recommends reconfirming your schedule a month and then a week before you go. You should also break your addiction to using Delta’s and Northwest’s frequent flyer programs cards. You never know what could happen with these programs, so stop trying to earn miles. If you have miles, use them! Also, people are speculating that Delta could be absorbed by bankrupt Northwest. But that is pure speculation. Employees are going to get eaten alive. There will be paycuts and layoffs, just as there were at USAir and United. This is the unfortunate part. Employees always get hit the worst. But for consumers, it will simply mean better service. Just don’t buy into the speculation about buying stocks. The stocks are worthless, and that is just bad advice.
Save $10 on your online grocery order at www.albertsons.com when you use coupon code SCNP943
Looking for a unique children's gift for Christmas? If you're already familiar with Veggie Tales then you might be interested to know that you can order a music CD with all those cute vegetables singing your child's name
throughout each song. Super cute. www.justmemusic.us/socal
Save 40% when you order online at www.spa-gourmet.com when you use discount code San916.
That's it for now! Have a great day!

Saving Change

Hi gang!
Most of us have change jars all over his house, especially if you have men in the house. At the end of the day, we dump the change from our pockets into the jar. It’s a great way to save money, and it teaches kids an invaluable lesson. The problem is that some big banks are now charging to accept change or count change. It’s just another example of the arrogance of banks out there. Some credit unions don’t charge, but they are hard to find.
The good news is that Coinstar has entered alliances with four retailers that will count your change for free, plus a 9 percent commission. That’s right - you get your money plus nine percent. The only caveat is that you get a gift card in exchange to use at those retailer stores. Amazon, Starbucks, Pier 1 and Hollywood Video are the retailers involved. Find out more at coinstar.com.
JoAnn's is having a scrapbooking extravaganza where you can save 30% on cool stuff. You can also save 50% off one item when you shop on-line. Just enter promotion code SEPER5502 when you checkout at www.joann.com
Motive Entertainment is sponsoring the Chronicles of Naria sneek peak all around the country. If you're in a position of leadership in a church (teacher, paster, counselor, etc.) you can get free tickets and even meet the Co-producer of the movie (step-son of C.S.Lewis!) Check out http://www.narniaresources.com/events/

To save big bucks on LDS books check out http://ldscloseouts.com
USA Data Net is getting great press lately for saving customers booko bucks
on long distance. You can basically talk all you want for 99 cents! Call
1-877-499-2368 or go to www.usadatanet.com They'll give you a $5 coupon
for free with coupon code #887 and another $1.99 in free phone usage for each friend you tell about the service, plus they give your friend $1.99 too! Check it out!
To file a cell phone complaint you can go to www.bbb.com or www.escapecellhell.org
For free trade magazines go to http://associates.tradepub.com/
This isn't necessarily a thrifty tip, but a helpful one I wanted to pass along....
Paramedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to that person's identity. You can make their job much easier with a simple idea that they are trying to get everyone to adopt: ICE.
ICE stands for 'In Case of Emergency.' If you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone under ICE, with the name and phone number of the person that the emergency services should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and have your loved ones contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of your time to do. Paramedics know what ICE means and they look for it immediately. ICE your cell phone NOW! You might not want to stop at just ICE. Go ahead and enter an ICE2, ICE3, etc just in case no one is home at ICE.
Alrighty then, that's it for today! Be good out there!

Credit Cards

Hi gang!
If you love reading celebrity magazines but want to cut costs, the drop your subscription and just log onto www.eonline.com and you'll get the same juicy, trashy scoop you would in the magazines but for free!
From September 2nd to September 30th, Ancestry.com will open the 1901 UK
Census Index to all users. (Yes, this means free access!) To get access to
their other great information you can buy a paid subscription, but to get free access all the time you can also visit any Family History Center in your town located inside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
If you live in Carlsbad, you can also get free access on the second floor of the library on Pio Pico & Carlsbad Village Drive.
BEWARE NEW CREDIT CARD SCAM
Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it.
This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to protect yourself.
The scam works like this: Person calling says, "This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460 Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in Arizona?" When you say "No", the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?"
You say "yes". The caller continues - "I will be starting a Fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?"
Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says, "I need to verify you are in possession of your card". He'll ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers". There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security Numbers' that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, "That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?"
After you say No, the caller then thanks you and states, "Don't hesitate to call back if you do", and hangs up. You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master card directly for verification of their conversation.
Be good out there.

Hallmark

Hi everyone!
When you care enough to send the very best, but still want to save money, go to www.hallmark.com and you can send FREE e-cards! :)
I just had a TERRIBLE experience with www.hotels.com and do NOT recommend them!
San Diego area subscribers:
Good news: IKEA will treat you to a free lunch if you bring in one foot of
newspaper to recycle when you visit their store!
Terrible news: The Carlsbad Police Dept. says there was an attempted child
abduction recently in the Aviara area. The guy was described as a
Hispanic male, 40ish, pocked marked skin with a mole on the side of his nose. He had curly hair. He was driving a red pick up with a trailer hitch and either a white cab on the back or those large white tool boxes. The girl he attempted to pull into the car was 10 years old.
There was also a rape two days ago at the Batiquitos Lagoon parking lot in broad daylight. Girls, please be careful.
A subscriber in Carlsbad would like to know if anyone has a good recommendation for a carpet cleaner. I actually got so fed up with them that I bought my own cleaner and do it myself!
Eeesh! Not the happiest e-mail lately, eh?
Be careful out there everyone.

Humanitarian Aid

Hi everyone
This past week we have all seen haunting images of destruction and suffering. While the Sister Thrifty newsletter strives to help us all save some of our hard-earned money, it is with the understanding that one of the most important things we can do with our money is to help others.
Please consider sending a generous donation to one of these two trusted humanitarian services:
1. The LDS Foundation's Humanitarian Services Fund, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a proven humanitarian service and the only one that sneds 100% of its donations to those in need. The Red Cross, among many other groups, have acknowledged the Church's organization for its extraordinary effectiveness. You can donate by clicking on this
link:
http://www.lds.org/ldsfoundation/welfare/0,7133,1325-1-9-cWELFAREPOSTER,00.html
2. The Salvation Army:
https://secure.salvationarmy.org/donations.nsf/donate?openform&projectid=USN-hurricane05
3. The Red Cross
www.redcross.com
We also invite you to join us in fasting and prayers this Sunday, September 4, by attending either the church of your choice or a monthly Fast and Testimony Service held at your local meeting house of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
