Airline

Hi girls! :O)
I want to tell you about a wonderful event coming to town. It's called "Time Out For Women", sponsored by Deseret Book and will be held on November
13 (Saturday) from 9-4:00 at the San Diego Convention Center. The roster of speakers that day include Sheri Dew (fabulous), Mary Ellen Edmunds (hillarious), James Ferrell (inspiring), Wendy Watson (wonderful) and a great concert performance by the handsome George Dyer (LDS version of Josh
Groban!) and Jenny Frogley (pretty voice). It's a great event to bring non-members to and feel the sisterhood of good women here in San Diego. You can buy tickets on-line for $41 ($38 plus $3 processing fee) at www.tickets.deseretbook.com and read more about the big day. You can also purchase tickets from Trina Boice (lovely lady) for only $38. After November 8th the price goes up on-line and at the door (Trina's price will stay at $38). If you attend the event you'll see me there (unless you still don't know who Sister Thrifty is, in which case I could be anyone in the sea of women there). :)

If you have a child in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade you can get a "passport" for him/her to ski, snowboard, and sled for free at some of the ski resorts in California and Nevada this winter! Well, technically, you have to pay an
$18 processing fee but that's still pretty doggone cheap if you consider how much ski passes really cost! Fill out the application on-line at www.californiasnow.com/passport.htm
Airlines in peril mean deals for you!
Is it a good idea to buy a ticket on an airline that might go bust just because the ticket is cheaper? Yes! Buy them up while you can. US Air will most likely shut down and its assets sold off, but you can still get great deals. Delta is also on a path toward bankruptcy. The company may settle with stockholders in order to continue operations, but it’s really up in the air. And United has been in bankruptcy for the last few years, unable to get out. So, what does this mean to you? Well, fall is usually a time for lots of promotions. But this year, you’ll get even more great deals because of the downward spiral of these three airlines. Just make sure to reserve on a credit card. If you have frequent flier miles on US Air, it goes without saying that you should use them soon. Try to use them with one of US Air’s partner airlines if you can’t use them US Air. The same goes with United and Delta. And if you have a card that earns frequent flier miles with one of these airlines, it’s time to get a new card. You can always get miles on different airlines through American Express. Clark can’t say which of these airlines will shut down or if any of them will, but you want to protect yourself. The employees of these airlines are the real sufferers here. It’s been especially tough for US Air employees, who have already been through layoffs, years of uncertainty and reorganizations. But it’s great news for consumers. The airline industry is going through severe restructuring, so it’s a game of wait-and-see. If you’ve bought a ticket on a airline for a future trip and that airline goes bust, you’ll get the money back but you probably won’t get a trip. If you don’t like the uncertainty of buying a ticket on one of these airlines, don’t buy from one of them. But if you are flexible, you’ll be fine.
Have a great day!

Triangle of Life

Since this e-mail newsletter posted there has been some contraversy over these safety techniques....you may want to do a google search and read more about this.....

Hello ladies,
This isn't necessarily a "thrifty" tip, but a good one nonetheless and worth passing on. Now that I think about it, it IS a thrifty tip, because using these safety ideas could save you a ton of money if you can avoid getting crushed and have to pay huge medical expenses... :) By the way, earthquake researchers have been saying that an earthquake is expected in California in September. We're almost through with September....
Be safe out there girls!

Car jacking

Hi everyone!
Just wanted to let you know what's going on at Ultra Star Cinemas (the one by Vons on the corner of Aviara Parkway & Alga & El Camino). Everyone gets a free popcorn with every admission ticket until September 30th. Let them know if you want to be put on their mailing list and they'll send you weekly coupons off snacks & tickets in the mail, along with what's playing each week. ALSO, if you're going to go there often, be sure to get their frequent viewer club card...each time you buy a ticket you earn free passes, popcorn, etc. AMC and even that giant Edwards Stadium theatre in San Marcos have their own cards that do the same thing.
If you haven't discovered LDS Living magazine now is the time....because you
can get an issue for FREE! Go to www.ldsliving.com/freemagazine.asp?cat=8
It really is a neat magazine.

Lastly, a reminder that there will NOT be a Relief Society dinner before the broadcast on September 25th because the flooring in the Cultural Hall still isn't complete. Don't worry though gals, you'll still be served some yummy
refreshments by the kitchen after the broadcast. :)
I hope everyone is enjoying the big surf from the two swells that came in these past few days. Are we having beautiful weather or what?! Have a wonderful day!

Do Not Call lists

Hi girls!
Happy Labor Day weekend!
School has started and you know what that means.....fundraisers. Eeeeesh.
I can't stand sending my kids out there peddling junk no one wants or needs.
The Carlsbad High School Cross Country team, however, actually has a product you may be interested in this year: those "Entertainment" coupon books. They have one that costs $20 and another big, beefy one for $40.
You only have to use a couple of the coupons in the entire book to break even. If you're interested in buying one let me know and I'll hook you up with all of the moms of runners on this year's team.
>
If you enjoy being on the FTC's "Do Not Call" list as much as I do, listen to a word of advice. Make sure you, and your kids, avoid all the websites that claim to be giving away freebie iPods, flat screen TVs, or sweepstakes prizes. If not, the thing you might actually win is a renewed stream of
telemarketing calls. Some interesting language in the privacy policy of a
"free sweepstakes"
website that some have been foolish enough to join. By registering with the site, the privacy policy stated that one was agreeing that "such act constitutes an inquiry and/or application for purposes of the Amended Telemarketing Sales Rule, 16 CFR §310 et seq. (the "Rule"). Notwithstanding that your telephone number may be listed on the Federal Trade Commission's Do-Not-Call List, ... (the sweepstakes company) retains the right to contact you via telemarketing in accordance with the Rule."
No, I'm not going to name the sweepstakes operation, as I don't want to give them any free publicity. In any case, similar language is in the privacy policies of a number of other freebie websites. And even when they are not so explicit about voiding the Do Not Call list, the privacy policy of many of the giveaway sites say things like "We may sell the personal information that you supply to us and we may work with other third party businesses to bring selected retail opportunities to our members via direct mail, e-mail and telemarketing."
Note that, while privacy policies don't seem to be all that binding on the vendor, the reverse unfortunately does not seem to be the case. You can give away your privacy rights by "agreeing" to a privacy policy you never read!
